Several weeks ago, Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC Corporation announced the availability of a new software update for its high-end HTC Desire HD, one that would bring the new Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS into the mix, and that update is rolling-out now on handsets available in Australia via Vodafone.

The new firmware would arrive on HTC Desire HD devices out there as an over-the-air update, which means that users would receive a notification when the software is available for their devices.

The new software would arrive on devices as ROM version 2.37.178.8 for Vodafone, and ROM version 2.37.861.8 for Hutchison, a recent post on Vodafone's blog reads.

Some of the main enhancements the new software update would bring forth should include:

- UI refinements for simplicity and speed - Quicker and easier access to the settings (Quicks settings tab in the notification bar) - Improved Apps management via tabs in the all apps menu - New camera settings - And some HTC fixes improving the overall user experience

The new software would weigh in at around 103MB, and users are advised to download and install it via an WiFi connection.

As stated above, the software arrives over the air, and users would be notified on its availability, while being offered the option to accept the upgrade or postpone it.

The download would run in the background but, as soon as it is completed, users would be prompted to install the new software.

During the installation process, the phone won't be available for use. Owners of a HTC Desire HD should make sure that the battery of their devices is charged enough to ensure it won't be drained during the installation process.

The Android 2.3.3 is not the last flavor of Android that Google released into the wild. However, since HTC did not launch a phone powered by Android 2.3.4, the update is not available for existing phones either, Vodafone explains.

“HTC have not launched any devices running Android version 2.3.4. Due to this, the HTC Desire HD will be receiving the 2.3.3 upgrade for VF Global in Europe, hence the same for Australia,” the carrier announced.
