Nothing official for the time being

One of the nicest things about the various Android ROMs being pushed into the wild via unofficial sources is that they include some features and functionalities that the manufacturer of a device did not intend to make available with the phone in the first place. This applies to the HTC Desire and one of the latest Android 2.2 ROMs available for it, which enables the device to record 720p HD videos.

The HTC Desire came to the market with Google's Android 2.1 operating system on board, which did not offer support for this functionality. Even so, the handset packs a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, which is on par with other high-end devices out there, including its twin brother Nexus One, Apple's iPhone, or Motorola's DROID X handset.

The mobile phone was already highly appealing, and has seen impressive traction on the market in Europe, causing a series of stock issues for various carriers on the continent. However, the new Android 2.2 Froyo port the guys over at XDA Developers came up with should make it even more appealing. The videos embedded at the bottom of this article courtesy of thegadgets.net show how the desire can handle the 720p video recording.

We should mention that the Android 2.2 Froyo port made available for Desire includes a nice range of other goodies too, such as HTC’s Sense solution, support for Adobe’s Flash technology, as well as a JIT compiler for faster overall performance, at least this is what a recent article on IntoMobile states. HTC committed to deliver the Android 2.2 Froyo update for all the devices it launched in 2010, Desire included, and this ROM might show a preview of what should come our way in the near future.

As stated above, this software solution is not an official release, which means that some things might not go as well as intended. Moreover, even if this kind of ROMs might seem highly appealing, based on the features they packs inside, users should think twice before downloading and installing them, as various problems might emerge during or after the installation process.
