HTC Desire 816, the latest mid-range smartphone from Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC Corporation, is enjoying increased interest from users in China and has managed to rack up 700,000 reservations in about 5 days.

The mobile phone was made official last month in Barcelona, during the Mobile World Congress, when HTC announced it as its latest flagship mid-range handset.

HTC Desire 816 comes to the market with a 5.5-inch touchscreen display and is set to arrive in China before the end of March, with other markets expected to receive it in the not too distant future.

The handset comes with mid-range specs and capabilities packed inside, but aims at the higher-end of this market segment, and also sports a rather affordable price tag, at 1799 Yuan ($293/€210).

As GSMInsider notes, users interested in purchasing the mobile phone will also receive a series of free gifts. The handset can be reserved through Yixin.com now.

HTC’s Desire lineup has already proved quite successful in a variety of markets out there, and it seems that it might soon prove even more popular among mobile phone users, especially with Desire 816 included in the lineup.

With 700,000 units already reserved, we cannot help but wonder whether the phone will reach the one million mark before the end of this week.

However, it should be noted that reservations do not count as pre-orders do in other markets, and that it also remains to be seen whether all reserved units will be bought once the handset becomes available for purchase. In China, those who reserve a handset are allowed to purchase it before others do.

In case you missed previous reports on HTC Desire 816, you should know that the phone comes to the market with a 720p screen and is powered by a quad-core Snapdraong 400 processor.

Moreover, the handset packs 1.5GB of RAM inside, along with 8GB of internal memory, and a microSD memory card slot for expansion purposes. On the back, the new device features a 13-megapixel camera with dull HD video recording capabilities, paired with a 5MP front camera for making video calls.

The smartphone also provides users with the entire range of connectivity capabilities that can be found in today’s smartphones, while also packing the usual set of sensors.

HTC desire 816 does not run under the latest version of Google’s Android operating system out there, but does feature HTC’s own set of customization options, which are better known to users under the name of HTC Sense.

Overall, the new Desire 816 looks like a great handset for those interested in an affordable, yet capable smartphone, and HTC might be able to recover from the long series of bad quarters with it.
