Not so long ago we saw HTC’s upcoming budget handset, the Desire 626, leak in a photograph along with the information according to which the Taiwanese company is looking to introduce the phone at MWC 2015.

Well, it appears HTC will be looking to focus its press event on the flagship One M9 model, so with a few weeks before the Mobile Congress kick starts in Barcelona, the device maker has officially announced the Desire 626 smartphone.

The new handset will arrive into the wild with a 5-inch display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and will draw power from a 64-bit quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor.

The Desire 626 offers a 13MP/5MP camera combo, which is a lot better than you’d expect to find on similarly priced handsets.

To Lollipop or not to Lollipop?

The phone also comes equipped with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage (which is expandable via microSD) and LTE connectivity. It lives off a decent 2,000 mAh battery and runs Android with HTC Sense on top (although we don’t know if we’re talking Lollipop or KitKat).

The new HTC Desire 626 will be compatible with DotView cases, just like most of its high-end to mid-range smartphone models coming out of HTC.

We currently don’t know when the new handset will be making it out to the US and Europe, nor how much it will cost when it reaches these territories. However, the Taiwanese HTC shop lists the Desire 626 as selling for approximately $189 / €166.

Is it better than the Moto G?

Now looking at the specs and price of the new device, it seems pretty obvious that the HTC Desire 626 has been designed to be a direct competitor to the Motorola Moto G.

The 2014 version also comes with a 5-inch display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and draws life from a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 fitted with 1GB of RAM. However, compared to the HTC Desire 626, we find only 8GB of internal storage onboard (expandable via microSD up to 32GB).

As for photography, the Moto G enjoys an 8MP/2MP camera setup. The handset is currently receiving the Android 5.0 Lollipop update and sells for around $180 / €164.

Going back to the HTC Desire 626, the company will also roll out an octa-core MediaTek-powered version which should sell exclusively in China.
