Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC Corporation has been long rumored to plan the launch of a successor for its HTC Butterfly handset, and it seems that the smartphone is finally nearing an official unveiling, as it has already started to emerge in benchmarks.

A yet unannounced HTC 0PAJ3 smartphone was spotted in AnTuTu with a touchscreen display capable of delivering a full HD (1080p) resolution, supposedly the very HTC Butterfly successor that we’re all expecting.

While no official confirmation on the matter has been provided as of now, it is clear that HTC might soon bring to the market a new high-end device running under Android, and that it has leaked online via the aforementioned benchmarking application.

HTC 0PAJ3 was spotted with a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor packed inside, as well as with 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal memory. It also includes an Adreno 330 GPU, as gforgames reports.

Moreover, the yet unannounced device has a 13-megapixel camera on the back, along with a 5MP front camera, to allow users to make video calls while on the go.

The smartphone was spotted in AnTuTu with the Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system loaded on top, though HTC might bring it to shelves with its own Sense 6.0 included in the package as well.

Apparently, the new device is currently destined only for the market in Japan, give the “J” in its model number, though chances are that HTC will release an international flavor of the phone as well, in the not too distant future.

As PhoneArena notes, this also explains why the company went for a 113-megapixel camera instead of a 4MP UltraPixel one. However, should the device arrive on shelves internationally, HTC might decide to replace the camera with an UltaPixel sensor in the end.

No info on what name this smartphone might feature when released has been provided, but HTC Butterfly 2 appears to be a possible candidate.

For those out of the loop, we should note that HTC Butterfly was launched in Japan as Butterfly J and that it landed on shelves in the United States at Verizon Wireless as HTC Droid DNA. A Butterfly S model was also released.

The new phone could suffer a similar fate as its predecessor, despite the lack of official confirmation on the matter. However, it remains to be seen when exactly HTC makes it official and whether it will release it in Europe too, given that the original never landed on this continent.
