HTC is feeling good about its action camera prospects

HTC is trying to make ends meet somehow and apparently their strategy includes making an entry into the action camera market.

The company launched the odd-looking RE camera not so long ago. It’s a light and portable shooter devoid of a viewfinder that was built with the purpose of easily letting users shoot videos and photos by virtue of a button push.

At the moment the camera will cost you $199 / €161, which is a bit pricey considering there are options out there like the $130 / €102 GoPro HERO entry-level action camera out there.

Even if I’m a bit skeptic the camera will turn out to be popular, HTC doesn't feel this way. According to a new report coming from Focus Taiwan, the device maker is already gearing up to produce a successor for RE.

HTC’s North Asia President Jack tong has confirmed the RE camera will arrive on the market in 2015 and will be a product for the mass consumer market.

Sadly, he did not offer more details related to the specifications of the camera. It will be interesting to see whether HTC chooses to maintain the same, corky design of the first generation.

HTC is pretty positive about its RE camera business. They assume that about 5% of the 8 million smartphone buyers in Taiwan will be interested in purchasing the RE camera (which only sells in the US now). When this threshold is crossed, time will come for a new camera model to appear on the market.
