The carrier is likely to avoid any comment on the matter

The HTC 8X is a popular Windows Phone handset in the United States, as most major carriers in the country had it in their portfolios at some point.

The smartphone received the latest Windows Phone 8.1 update in several countries, but in the United States Verizon has recently announced the upgrade has been delayed for a later date.

AT&T is another US-based carrier that offered the HTC 8X, but we’re still waiting for official word on when exactly the smartphone will get the Windows Phone 8.1 update.

The last major OS update that AT&T HTC 8X received is Windows Phone 8 GDR3, which happened about a year ago. After that, the smartphone only got minor updates that fixed minor issues or added small improvements.

If you happen to own an AT&T-branded HTC 8X, then you might be in for some bad news. We’ve been tipped by someone who spoke with the Taiwanese handset maker about the Windows Phone 8.1 update for this particular device and things aren’t looking well at all.

Apparently, HTC has no intentions of upgrading the AT&T version of 8X to Windows Phone 8.1 in the near future. In fact, the smartphone might never get the long-awaited upgrade and AT&T won’t even announce it.

AT&T recently offered the same major update to Samsung ATIV S Neo

The information comes as real surprise given AT&T’s recent history when it comes to Windows Phone updates. For those out of the loop, the carrier announced less than two weeks ago that Samsung ATIV S Neo is eligible for Windows Phone 8.1 upgrade.

One would expect that AT&T will try and bring other Windows Phone handsets in its portfolio to the latest version of the operating system, but the HTC 8X seems to have been skipped for unknown reasons.

Unfortunately, it’s unclear who’s at fault here, HTC or AT&T. We don’t even know why the companies decided not to release Windows Phone 8.1 for the 8X, even though everyone is still expecting it.

We wouldn’t be surprised if Verizon and HTC announced that the promised Windows Phone 8.1 update for the 8X has been canceled. Although for the time being the upgrade is only delayed for an unknown date, there’s a high chance Windows Phone 8.1 may never arrive for Verizon HTC 8X.

We recommend our readers to take the information with a grain of salt until AT&T comes forward with an official statement. It’s a pity though that the carrier is still mum on the matter with so many people that own its version of HTC 8X.

Thanks, Ed!
