Pretty soon, we may be swarmed by 2560 x 1440-pixel displays

We've already seen the signs. After all, Acer has just revealed the Aspire S7-392 Ultrabook and its intention to eventually launch a version with a display of 2560 x 1440 pixels.

Indeed, this is what signs point towards: that a generation of laptops with displays better than Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) is approaching.

Sure enough, there are reports that this will happen sooner rather than later.

Toshiba and HP, not necessarily in that order, will be at the forefront of the movement.

It's pretty amazing really. You'd expect this move to a higher resolution to happen on the monitor and TV front first but, not counting the UHD TV current, that's not really happening.

It looks like Apple's Retina displays really gave the laptop market a kick where it hurts.

HP and Toshiba will try their hand with small shipments first, and work their way up. The initial wave could come before September.
