It looks like a certain leading supplier of PCs has resolved to design a new version of the TouchPad tablet before the end of this year's summer, complete with support for 4G broadband.

As far as the media tablet market goes, HP's efforts to gain a foothold are reliant on a certain device known as the TouchPad.

This tablet is the only webOS slate running around the world and will, apparently, get an update before summer is out.

The first rumor to this effect emerged about a week ago, but official confirmation has since been provided.

It turns out that a TouchPad tablet with support for 4G wireless connectivity really is on the way, although this doesn't include LTE. Instead of Long term Evolution, the HP TouchPad 4G will utilize HSPA+.

AT&T is the one that will commercialize the newcomer, although actual pricing and release dates have been kept under wraps.

"Consumers and small business customers are seeking cutting-edge mobile computing devices that offer easy access to the web and the ability to stay in touch with friends and clients on the go," said David Haight, vice president, Business Development, Emerging Devices, AT&T.

"The TouchPad 4G is a sharp, multifunctional device that delivers the perfect set of features. Pairing it with the nation's fastest mobile broadband network and most extensive Wi-Fi network gives TouchPad 4G users the best mobile broadband experience in the market."

In addition to 4G support, the tablet will feature a faster 1.5 GHz processor, plus integrated GPS and 32 GB of built-in NAND Flash storage.

"TouchPad 4G is ideal for anyone who needs maximum flexibility for productivity on the go," said David Gee, vice president, Marketing and Enterprise Solutions, webOS, Personal Systems Group, HP.

"It's particularly well suited for users who rely on connectivity in the field – from large corporations to small businesses and self-employed mobile professionals."
