Last month, it was revealed that what HP was working on was thought to be a really cheap laptop taking advantage of Windows 8.1 and AMD Mullins.

Back then we told you that the Stream 14 notebook would end up selling for $199 / €148, but today HP has officially launched the product and sadly the price-tag isn’t as low as we have expected.

It’s about $100 / €78 more, but to be fair, HP never said anything related to the pricing of the upcoming machine. This information originally came from a Microsoft official, but it appears HP has changed its mind and decided to charge extra for the product.

HP’s new Steam 14 notebook is supposed to be Microsoft’s answer to Chromebook, and you can expect the device to make an appearance in retail starting September 24 for $300 / €233.

However, with this price tag some customers might be quite skittish in picking it up, especially since its specs aren’t exactly mind-blowing or anything.

The larger screen factor might be making the price difference

The notebook arrives with a 14-inch screen and delivers the regular 1366 x 768 pixel resolution. You might consider a particularity the fact that HP chose to add an AMD Mullins low-power processor to maintain things alive and running.

The processor is actually a quad-core chip with TDP of 4.5 watts, working in concert with Radeon R3 graphics. The processor is quite a rare bird and we have only managed to spot it running under the bonnet of the Pavilion 10z mini lappy.

Everything onboard of the Stream 14 is fitted with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, but also with 100GB of free cloud storage from Microsoft OneDrive for 2 years.

From the port department, customers will be able to take advantage of 1USB 3.0, 2 USB 2.0 ports, HDMI out and microSD card reader.

The HP Stream relies on a 32Whr battery and the producing company says this should be enough for up to 6.5 hours of worktime. The laptop also takes advantage of 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and is Miracast ready.

The lappy is the beneficiary of a fanless design and weighs 3.8 lbs /1.7kg, while its measurements are 13.5 x 9.5 x 0.7 inches / 34.2 x 24.1 x 1.7 cm.

What if you don’t want to pay $300 / €233 for the HP Stream 14?

If the HP Stream seems too expensive for you, you’ll be glad to know you have a choice. Just a few days ago at IFA 2014, ASUS unveiled the new EeeBook Z205 budget laptop which should sell for $199 / €148.

The colorful laptop boasts an 11.6-inch screen with 1366 x 758 pixels and takes advantage of an Intel Atom Z3735 Bay Trail processor fitted with 2GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB of internal storage.

And unlike the larger HP Stream 14, the new ASUS laptop is said to be able to deliver up 12 hours of life on a single charge.
