HP will launch an external HD DVD-ROM player (the HD100) later this month, while Sony will launch its BWU-100A Blu-ray Disc (BD) burner next month, according to the two companies.
The launches involve the Taiwan market only, according to Digitimes.

The HD100 can play back HD DVD movie discs at a high-definition (HD) resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels, HP Taiwan indicated. The top eight movie studios in Hollywood have published more than 100 HD DVD movies, showed the same source. However, HP Taiwan did not release the retail price of the HD100.

Sony originally planned to launch the BWU-100A in Taiwan last quarter, but decided to defer the launch to November, Sony Taiwan indicated.

Pioneer and LG have launched BD burners in the Taiwan market, each selling less than 100 units a month, according to local industry sources. The small sales volume is because HD DVD and BD burners/players are much more expensive than DVD models, showed the sources.

Furthermore, Apple (at first a Blu-ray supporter only) is now likely to add HD-DVD support as well to their next OS release, named Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, scheduled for release early next year. It is also believed that they will add support for both formats in their upcoming new version of their Final Cut Pro video editing software, scheduled for release mid next year, according to ThinkSecret.
