You might be familiar with HP’s Slate 6 VoiceTab phablet and Slate 7 VoiceTab tablet, which have been launched on the market not so long ago.

But as Notebook Italia reports, the company is rolling a new, improved version of the 7-incher model. Showing its face at an event in India, Mumbai, the product goes by the name of HP Slate VoiceTab 7 Ultra.

The tablet was previously spotted making a stop at the Wi-Fi Alliance back in April, but now since the VoiceTab 7 Ultra has appeared into the wild, it make sense to claim the tab is official.

The device comes with a 7-inch IPS display that, unlike the previous model, delivers a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. But there are other nifty features being offered here.

HP now uses a dual-band chip (2.4 / 5GHz) and we’re told there is a plastic part on top, whose jobs is to avoid hindering the communication with the Wi-Fi antenna.

Moving on, the tablet runs on an unnamed quad-core 1.6GHz processor, which is more powerful than the previous 1.2GHz one. The slate is also fitted with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD).

HP has considerably bumped things up in the photography department, updating the rear snapper to 13MP, while the frontal webcamera takes advantage of 5MP (before we had an 8MP one on the back and a 2MP one in the front).

But a major bummer disappointment comes in the software department. Sadly, the default OS continues to be Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with the proprietary HP Emotion UI plastered on top.

We have no word whether the company plans to introduce the Android 4.4 KitKat update at some point or not, but judging by their track record, we’re not so encouraged.

We’ve recently reported that the KitKat update started rolling out for the HP Slate 7 Extreme (which is basically a re-branded version of the NVIDIA Tegra Note 7) four months later than the Advent Vega, Gigabyte and EVGA models.

Back when it was launched, the original HP Slate 7 VoiceTab arrived with a 7-inch touchscreen display, capable of delivering 1280 x 800 pixel resolution and 1.2GHz quad-core Mavell PXA1088 processor inside.

The slate sold in India for around $272 / €199, but the HP Slate 7 Ultra VoiceTab with its bumped specifications could end up costing a little bit more. We’ll keep an eye out for when the tablet arrives in retail and bring you word about it.
