Last month, we told you the story of an Australian user who wanted to pick up an HP Chromebook 11. So he went down to his local electronics store to pick one up. But surprise-surprise, instead of the regular model, our customer apparently purchased an unreleased model of the device.

Now, as we predicted some time ago, the new model has been officially unveiled by HP. The company has introduced the new version as part of its Back to School lineup, which consists of a number of new products.

The original HP Chromebook 11 launched a year ago bearing a price tag of $280 / €205 and featuring a Google-inspired design, but now the company is providing a new version coming with a new look and the lower price-tag of $249 / €183.

Like the model spotted in Australia a while back, the new Chromebook has obviously been designed by taking cues from the larger HP Chromebook 14.

HP has dropped the distinctive color bar located on the lid and the colored pads at the bottom, fully immersing the laptops in color.

But apart from the look, nothing much has changed compared to the model unveiled earlier. The smaller laptop comes with a Samsung Exynos 5250 ARM Cortex-A15 dual-core processor fitted with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.

Interestingly enough, HP has beefed up the new model a little bit. So compared to the earlier version, the new one has 2.7 lbs / 1.22 kg, instead of the lighter 2.3 lbs / 1.04 kg. On top of that, the newcomer is also a little thicker.

Overall, the two laptops remain pretty light and thin, but one can’t help feeling that HP took a little backwards instead of achieving some progress.

We’re not only saying that because of the size difference. It appears the next-gen Chromebook 11 doesn’t come boasting the same vibrant display the earlier model had. This one has a cheaper matte display, something similar to what Samsung used in its first Chromebook model.

But if you’re looking for a fun, cheap, colorful laptop, the new HP Chromebook 11 might be for you. The laptop will be offered in white, red and turquoise coloring options.

For US customers, HP has announced the new device will be made available in the US starting this July, but the notebook has already popped up in a few retail locations in some countries.
