It looks like the Western Digital subsidiary has its work cut out for it

It was a month ago that HGST, formerly Hitachi Global Storage Technologies and now a Western Digital subsidiary, launched 6 TB, seven-platter helium-filled HDDs. Alas, not many have adopted them.

Consumers aren't about to suddenly start buying the high-end, high-storage HDDs en masse, and HGST knew this when it launched it.

It's why it negotiated that deal with Huawei for its use. Unfortunately, other than that deal, there doesn't seem to be any more immediate interest in the storage device.

HGST has offered the hermetically sealed helium-filled 6TB hard disk drives to Taiwan-based ODMs, for their data centers, but whether or not it will get orders is still uncertain.

It's actually kind of surprising, given the clear assets the drives have: 40% more storage in the same 3.5-inch package. 6 TB is nothing to scoff at in that size.
