They come in 2.5-inch form factor and 600 GB capacity

Usually, the members of a hard disk drive collection are set apart by their capacity, but that is not the case for the newest Ultrastar series from HGST.

Instead, the drives are distinguished by the interface they use to communicate with the rest of the system. The capacity is 600 GB all around.

We have the he 512n and 4Kn versions of the Ultrastar C15K600 hard drive family, with FIPS 140-2 certification and 12 Gb/s SAS interfaces. A 512e version will be launched this summer.

Those are format types, for anyone wondering about the difference. Advanced Format to be specific, as demanded by enterprise applications.

The newcomers all have 2.5-inch form factors and SSC compliance, as well as self-encryption and two times better random write performance thanks to flash-based non-volatile cache (NVC), as determined by HGST's media caching technology (provides a large caching mechanism for incoming data resulting in significantly enhanced write performance over normal NAND).

Higher performing servers, blades and network storage arrays should all benefit from upgrading to the Ultrastar C15K600 15K RPM 12 Gb/s SAS Hard Drives. That, at least, is what HGST says in its press release.

Reduced space requirements, lowered cooling costs and improved total cost of ownership (TCO) are cited as side benefits.
