HBO has released a brand-new teaser trailer for its upcoming series, “The Leftovers,” which got plenty of media attention in recent months because it’s the reason why leading man Justin Theroux has been spending so much time apart from fiancée Jennifer Aniston.

With this new trailer, we can finally focus on something else when we talk about it, namely that it looks very promising.

With a script by Damon Lindelof (“Lost,” “Prometheus”), the new drama is based on a novel by Tom Perrotta, who is also credited as creator. Perrotta’s resume also includes “Little Children” and “Election,” both of which have been turned into critically acclaimed feature film.

Just like with the first teaser, this one too beats about the bush a lot: this is a series about mysterious disappearances and gruesome deaths, and about a small community which is forced to cope with the disappearance of many of its members.

Yet the video includes lines from Walt Whitman’s poem “Song of Myself” in voiceover and serene music that hints at a very idyllic existence. “The smallest sprouts show there really is no death. All goes onward and outward. Nothing collapses. And to depart is different from anything anyone supposed... and luckier,” the narrator says.

And then, in a true HBO-worthy twist, we are shown that this is not really how things go in this small town. Check it out.
