The zombie survival game was released in January this year

The Daybreak Game Company, formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment, has announced that H1Z1 sold over 1 million copies.

The news comes from Daybreak Game Company President John Smedley, who has tweeted the information on his personal account.

The game is currently available on Steam Early Access, in its alpha state, and it's been quite a hit since its release back in January this year.

Although the final experience is designed to be a free-to-play game, the multiplayer zombie survival game currently has a price tag attached to it.

The game's coffers are also supplemented via premium content such as various cosmetic items, as well as random airdrop keys, with items that can impact gameplay. There has been quite a heated debate regarding the air drops, as the developers promised not to provide any pay-to-win features, and many saw the drops as just that.

Many have frowned upon seeing microtransactions added to an alpha

Since then, some tweaks have been made to airdrops, in order to provide a more fair playground for everyone involved, solving some of the issues causing the most animosity within the community, aside from the rampant cheating.

A portion of those who jumped on the experience even went as far as to demand full refunds for the title, and the sale of Sony Online Entertainment and a wave of layoff at the studio had the potential to mark some rainy days for H1Z1.

Apparently, that was not the case, as the game is alive and kicking, and doing quite well, especially since it's a pretty stripped-down edition, with many of the planned features missing. H1Z1 has constantly been present at the top of Steam's best-selling charts, now reaching over a million units sold (not counting the optional in-game purchases), and becoming a veritable hit.

Apparently, buggy and arguably overpriced early access zombie games still hold sway with the PC crowd, as Bohemia Interactive's DayZ can attest. The video game has managed to sell over 3 million copies since its release on Steam Early Access in December 2013.
