They’ve been together for over a decade, but Coldplay could soon come to a dead end and announce they split if Gwyneth Paltrow, wife of frontman Chris Martin, has her way. Word in the industry has it the actress aims to go Yoko Ono on the popular British band by encouraging Martin to pursue a solo career to “diversify,” Betty Confidential writes.

According to well-placed sources, speaking to the aforementioned gossip column, Paltrow is adamant that Martin does not limit himself only to the work he does as Coldplay frontman. Diversity is best where creativity is concerned, she believes – therefore, she has already suggested to him that he take some time off the band to think and record a solo material, just to see how that goes. Martin, the spies further say, was not that pleased with the idea as one might believe.

“Gwyneth has outright told Chris that he should consider going solo. She is busy doing all of her projects and she wants him to diversify as well. She doesn’t have a problem with Coldplay, but she wants Chris to think about trying a solo album just to see if he likes it.” the insider reveals. However, far from doing her any good, the idea only made the situation between the two – already tense – that much worse. “When Gwyneth mentioned it, Chris was furious. He loves the band and he has no desire to change things right now. Chris basically ignored her and walked away.” the tipster explains.

Ironically enough, Betty Confidential points out, not long ago, it was Paltrow herself who was speaking out to squash rumors of any modifications within Coldplay. At the time, word in the media had it that she was considering going into music herself, and was planning on using her husband as a launching pad of sorts by recording a duet with him. Gwyneth denied these reports saying working with Martin would beg the question of whether Coldplay was heading for a split, and she didn’t want to be the cause of that.

“People ask if I will sing with the band or do a duet, but always in front of my mind is the Yoko effect. I don’t want to be known as the girl who split up Coldplay.” the star said at the time. If the above rumors are correct and Gwyneth is, indeed, encouraging Martin to pursue a solo career, fans will certainly agree with Betty Confidential when it notes, “My, how times have changed.”
