At the beginning of the month, writer / director Guillermo del Toro confirmed that he’d started working on the script for a sequel to “Pacific Rim” but, at the time, he remained cautious about saying whether it would end up in theaters or not. He is doing that now.

Check out the video below, from Legendary Pictures, with del Toro confirming the sequel. He doesn’t mention a possible release date, but he’s compensating for that with the promise of an animated series and that the comic book series that started with “Tales from Year Zero” will continue.

While the video announcement might not include too many juicy details for fans of the original film, luckily del Toro has also spoken to Buzzfeed and thus revealed that at least two of the characters from that one will return for the sequel.

Those would be Jaeger pilots Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) and Raleigh Becket (the ever-so-handsome Charlie Hunnam). He would not say if there is any truth to the reports that he’s planning on making Newt the villain in the sequel.

“The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast,” del Toro explains.
