World vs World scenarios will have big consequences in the MMO

The developers at ArenaNet have revealed the scope of the planned World versus World battles in the upcoming Guild Wars 2, which will apparently involve up to 300 hundred players engaged at the same time and can take up to two full weeks to come to a conclusion.

Mike Ferguson, who is the leading systems designer working on Guild Wars 2, stated, “We dreamed of a game where players could work together to capture objectives on the battlefield, like keeps and towers, claiming them for their guilds, then fortifications before defending them against hordes of attackers.”

He added, “With players from three different servers fighting each other, we knew that we would need a lot of different areas for them to fight over, and we wanted to have plenty of locations for guilds of all sizes to claim as their own.”

The developer says that the team has created situations and objectives that make it easier for large and small groups to perform just as well in the World versus World battles and even a small number of players can join together to enter the engagement and have an impact.

Gamers will be able to use blueprints in order to create war machines ranging from catapults to trebuchets and even Siege Golems can be brought in to take down gates and other fortifications.

The system seems very different from what other successful MMOs, like Star Wars: The Old Republic and World of Warcraft, offer.

ArenaNet has announced that it is currently opening up the beta phase for Guild Wars 2 and expects to launch the game later during the year.

The company plans to use the same business model of the first title in the series, asking gamers to pay for the initial game package and any expansions without then taxing them again for a monthly subscription.
