Developer ArenaNet has announced that its highly acclaimed massively multiplayer online role-playing game Guild Wars 2 will be made available for free for everyone for a whole week, starting this Thursday, September 25.

The free trial will not require players to purchase anything, and they will be able to simply download the game client from the ArenaNet servers and jump into the fantasy world of Tyria.

The game was released in August of 2012, with the company revealing that the game sold over 3.5 million copies within a year.

How to get in

All you have to do is create an account and download the client launcher, which will automatically start downloading the client and the latest Guild Wars 2 patch. You even get advance notice so you have a head start in setting the game up, making the most out of the limited amount of time you have with the game.

Furthermore, if you have an existing trial account from any of the game's previous trials, you'll be able to use it now. Otherwise, you can sign up for a free account on the trial page.

What's the catch?

The trial only lasts for one week, taking off on September 25, at 12:00 AM PDT / 7:00 AM GMT, and running until Wednesday, October 1, at 11:59 PM PDT / 6:59 AM GMT.

In addition to this, ArenaNet has informed that there will also be a number of mechanics changes in place for the trial, affecting trial accounts, intended mostly to curb gold sellers and other such spam.

Therefore, Trial Accounts are only able to send mails to players who have them on their friends list, and the same goes with in-game whispers. The players in the trial will also find that the map chat is unavailable to them, for the same reason.

Furthermore, Trial Accounts will be limited to just 2 character slots and will not be able to sell items in the Trading Post, access the Gem Store and the Currency Exchange.

Players undergoing the trial will not be able to engage in World-versus-World action either, but they will have access to the Edge of Mists.

It's worth giving the game a try if you haven't yet, since it's a pretty solid MMORPG that's a bit different from all the ones that tried to copy Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft.

Earlier this month, ArenaNet released the second Guild Wars 2 major feature pack, introducing a lot of changes to the early game experience and making things more friendly for newcomers, making it possibly the best time to see whether the game is worth a purchase.
