ArenaNet has confirmed that its special online role playing game, Guild Wars 2, will be released this year, and is going to be previewed by a beta stage that will start in spring, which will incrementally allow more and more people to try out the title.

Guild Wars 2, much like its predecessor, wants to deliver a role playing experience that’s focused both on regular gameplay and online interaction, but doesn’t charge a monthly fee, unlike World of Warcraft or Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Now, after running several closed beta stages, its developer, ArenaNet, has confirmed that the full game will be out in 2012, while open beta tests are scheduled to begin soon enough.

First up, Guild Wars 2 will be tried out in February by media members, while in March and April ArenaNet is expected to “aggressively ramp up” the size of the beta test in order to allow as many players as possible to experience the online RPG.

After feedback is gathered from these beta stages, the final game will be released towards the end of 2012 for the PC.
