Guide to Opening NAT (Xbox 360)

DEF - NAT: In computer networking, Network Address Translation (NAT, also known as Network Masquerading, Native Address Translation or IP Masquerading) is a technique of transceiving network traffic through a router that involves re-writing the source and/or destination IP addresses and usually also the TCP/UDP port numbers of IP packets as they pass through.

Checksums (both IP and TCP/UDP) must also be rewritten to take account of the changes. Most systems using NAT do so in order to enable multiple hosts on a private network to access the Internet using a single public IP address (see gateway). Many network administrators find NAT a convenient technique and use it widely. Nonetheless, NAT can introduce complications in communication between hosts and may have a performance impact.
(Wikipedia)

How To Open NAT:

According to ClickClickBoom up on the Xbox 360 forums, "all that is required is to enable DMZ, use port forwarding, or use UPnP. Using them all at the same time is just last resort. The point is to try them one by one." There is also reason to believe that this set of instructions may not work for everyone so take caution and see more pages on this topic before you proceed.

Step 1: Get your Xbox 360's IP address from the system blade and choose network settings. Then edit settings should show your Xbox's IP.

Step 2: Go into your routers configuration window through Internet Explorer. In the address bar type in your routers IP address. It should be default at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1. When you're prompted for a password you have found it =P. If you haven't changed it the username and password should both be admin, and admin.

Step 3: USING DMZ When you enter into your router config window, you need to find the Tab DMZ, it should be under applications and gaming if you are using Linksys. Once you find the DMZ tab, click enable and type in the last digits of your XBOX into the box below. Yes when you do this you are opening all the ports on your Xbox, which is insecure, but show me someone that has hacked into an xbox 360!

MAKE SURE YOU SAVE SETTINGS

Step 4:Using Port Forwarding After you have enabled DMZ, find the Port Forwarding tab, which should be under advanced routing. For the name type in XBL or whatever you want, and for port range put 87 to 89, choose UDP, then your XBOX last digits and enable. Then do 3073 to 3075 choose TCP, then your XBOX last digits and enable. Then again do 3073 to 3075 choose UDP, then your XBOX last digits, and enable.

MAKE SURE YOU SAVE SETTINGS

Step 5: Using UPnP This is just in case. Go into UPnP forwarding and enter the same stuff you did for Step 4.
MAKE SURE YOU SAVE SETTINGS

Step 6: Now logout of your router config. Unplug your router and modem from the power, then plug in the router 1st, wait 30 seconds. Then plug in the modem and wait at least 2 minutes. If you don't do these hard restarts it might not work!

Step 7: Restart your Xbox and go to the system blade, choose network settings, then test connection. This may take a bit, but when it gets down to NAT type it should say OPEN. If not, sorry. You can just undo all the settings we changed, you can just uncheck enabled on the port forwarding. Or if you want to restore your router to the factory defaults just push the reset button on the back of it.

Again, according to ClickClickBoom, there is reason to believe that this set of instructions may not work for everyone so take caution and see more pages on this topic before you proceed. Good luck!

It worked! Thanks a bunch!
Another guide I read said that only one of these should be used at a time, but using all of them at once worked just fine for me.

QUESTION: How do i cheched my NAT status with the new xbox experience dashboard? It doesn´t show it anymore when i test connection.

Comment #3.1 by: Joey on 19 May 2011, 18:15 GMT

On most Call of Duty games or Halo Reach, I've seen that it displays your NAT rating either on the pause menu in Reach or on multiplayer lobbies on call of duty..

Same question as Mera from 12/17. How do I check my NAT status with the xbox experience dashboard? It doesn't show it anymore whin I test the connection.

Comment #4.1 by: Emily on 22 Apr 2010, 14:30 GMT

Are you Johnny Durham from YouTube?

Comment #4.2 by: rabidkitty4 on 29 Apr 2010, 01:06 GMT

To check the NAT settings with NXE Dash. Test your XBL connection like normal, and if the xbox prompts you with a NAT problem, then something is wrong. If it doesn't do anything, and there isn't a Yellow caution sign on the last step, then your NAT is open.

Comment #5 by: Wes on 07 Feb 2009, 14:51 UTC reply to this comment

Yeah, how do you find the NAT Staus it doesnt show it on the new dashboard

Comment #6 by: Dave on 20 Feb 2009, 16:54 UTC reply to this comment

It no longer shows the NAT status but if your NAT status is not OPEN it will warn you when it does the connection test. So if you are not seeing a warning you should be OK.

Comment #11 by: Jerry on 22 Jul 2009, 15:52 UTC reply to this comment

In my router options it goes like this:

Enable [] NAME (xbl or w/e) In bound port type the private IP(where the xbox ip goes in i guess) private port

Where do I put in the port range? in inbound port or private port?

Comment #11.1 by: Larry on 19 Aug 2009, 23:35 GMT

You put the port range in both slots. So if the port you were trying to open was say port 80 you would have something like this---> xbl 80 192.168.2.4

Had to call my internet service provider to turn on upnp setting and i think that did it. not too sure yet but will find out. X box should have ability to control these settings due to the fact that some only have internet for the specific reason of playing on line!!!!!

Comment #26 by: Adam on 24 Apr 2010, 08:40 UTC reply to this comment

It WORKS!!!!!!!!!

One thing that I misunderstood at first was the xbox's IP address. If you set it to automatic, it should show you in the ip address section of network configuration on the dashboard, you need to use the ip address it assigns in the spaces of the port forwarding he discusses here.

Comment #32 by: Sean on 01 Jul 2010, 23:56 UTC reply to this comment

If putting my xbox in the DMZ (which opens all ports for it), why do I need to use port forwarding? Isn't the reason for port forwarding used to open specific ports to a unique IP address and leaves all other ports protected by the routers's firewall? So that said, there's no reason to use port forwarding if all ports are now forwarded outside of the routers firewall to the xbox's IP because it's in the DMZ. If I'm wrong on this, please explain why in detail.

I found using UPnP and forwarding caused a problem and found this which confirmed it:- http://www.unofficialguidetolive.co.uk/faqs/62-my-nat-is-strict-or-moderate

I ended up using Port Forwarding only from that page ^^ which works great for the DIR-300

Reboot your router and xbox360. Make absolutely sure your DNS settings are correct in your XBOX network settings. They don't always work if they are just the router 192.168.1.1.

Comment #41.2 by: pirka46 on 12 Feb 2011, 21:39 GMT

and it might be an idea to use static ip for the xbox... at least i know i have to...

Comment #44 by: Tech Guy For Free on 21 Nov 2010, 23:39 UTC reply to this comment

It is important to remember that the DNS settings must be correct as well. Also if you are having a lot of trouble getting it to work and have done everything, DON'T FORGET to reboot your router and xbox. First router then XBOX360. This will solve the issue a lot of the times if everything is set up correctly and still not working.

well, on the router that they used they probably only had to enter the numbers after the last . in the ip adress, so try that or the whole ip adress:)

Comment #54.1 by: pirka46 on 12 Feb 2011, 21:47 GMT

ip of the xbox, the router only has to know who it is going to place outside of the firewall...u might have to use static ip for the xbox too...u can do that in SYSTEM SETTINGS> NETWORK SETTINGS> (THE NETWORK UR CONNECTED TO)> CONFIGURE NETWORK. make sure the Gateway and the DNS is right... or u could set the DNS to automatic:)

Comment #56.1 by: zac6x9 on 04 Mar 2011, 23:26 GMT

If it is a thompson speed touch then you have are likely to have 2 versions of the software 4 and 6
I am sorry I can't help with version 4
version 6 does not support a dmz but it does allow
Assign the public IP address of a connection to a device
This is the option that you want to pick then choose the xbox from the drop down list.
Then reboot everything and you should be right.
least ways this worked for me
additional you can only have one device in this state so if you have 2 xboxs or a ps3 you are going to have to keep messing with the settings. or buy a new router.

My situation is a little more complicated. I have 2 xbox 360 (one is my sons) and I use Windows 7 Media centre to stream media to the Xboxs. I get NAT not open on both xboxs. If I use the port forwarding it fixes it for one and not the other which means only one console can join other parties. If I put the other in the DMZ it will work but it can no longer access the media from the media centre PC. Is there a way to have NAT open on both and still access the media centre? Is there a router that can port forward to 2 different xboxs? Would I be able to do it if I had 2 routers and is this even possible on 1 line?

Comment #69 by: Netguru on 22 Jul 2011, 03:37 UTC reply to this comment

Every guide I have found on this topic makes the ASSUMPTION that the address on the WAN side of the router is a public, routable address. If the user's household WAN address is in one of the NON-public ranges (http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3330), as is common with WISPs and some non-urban DSL services, this procedure is going to do nothing but open your games up to people who happen to share the same local carrier as you. Other players are going to get wiped off the windshield at the FIRST NAT boundary, which is at the carrier's central network site.

enabling DMZ worked for my xbox, but when i enabled it I cant use the internet on my PC. is there a way to fix that?

Comment #77.1 by: Duke on 01 Jan 2012, 05:13 GMT

What works for me in a dual Xbox scenario and provides both consoles with an Open NAT status... (we mainly play CoD games i.e. MW3)

I use UPnP flat out... I will say that how well UPnP works is largely dependent on the router vendor's implementation. For me, I use DD-WRT code running on a Cisco/Linksys E3000.
- for those interested I'm currently running build 18024 big:
ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2011/12-20-11-r18024/broadcom_K26/

NO DMZ, NO manual port forwarding, NO DMZ.

1st - On the router I've assigned both my Xbox's with a static DHCP address from the DHCP pool range. So essentially, I use DHCP but I always known what the IP addresses will be for both Xbox's.
2nd - I've enabled UPnP on the router. I also select "Clear port forwards at startup"
3rd - I always perform a network / xbox live test at startup which establishes the appropriate port forward entries in the UPnP table.

This setup works perfectly for our use given we sometimes run 2 Xbox consoles.

Prior to this setup I just put my Xbox in the DMZ but this of course does not work for multiple Xbox's on the same network if Open NAT is desired.

All this assumes your ISP provides you a public address (non NAT) on your WAN connection.

Hope this helps... Cheers.
