The fring dev team is putting the finishing touches what they call “a super cool new service” - free, mobile Group Video Calls. iPhone and iPod touch owners can get a free sample right now, test it, and communicate their experience to the software engineers handling the app.

fring is a voice calling and IM chatting application originally released in 2008 for jailbroken iPhone and iPod touch devices.

A lot has changed with the app since, including the fact that it’s now a legitimate download through Apple’s iTunes App Store.

But the people maintaining the service are not settling just yet.

They want to put free group video calling into the hands of as many customers as possible, from both the iOS and Android camps.

“We are having too much fun with it already, and want to get some feedback from users ahead of public launch on Android & iPhone,” the fring team writes on their blog.

According to them, this is the first time the world will get to enjoy free Group Video calls.

“This fring-feature lets 4 friends video call each other simultaneously, making it a mobile video calling party of sorts,” they explain.

Those who “don’t mind a little bit of set up” are welcome to give fring developers some ‘real world’ feedback on the service, which includes reporting bugs and the likes.

“If you love video calling, are keen to provide feedback and are interested in joining this limited beta, please fill out this form,” their announcement ends.

Demoed in a YouTube video embedded below, the function really seems like it’s going to make a splash, therefore we encourage you to check it out and consider joining the ‘Group Video Beta’ if you happen to have four other friends with devices that boast front-facing cameras.
