The Grooveshark iOS application has been retracted from the Apple App Store, following a complaint issued by Universal Music Group UK.

Grooveshark Mobile, an application touted as able to connect users to the world’s music library, offers search and playback abilities, extras like saved playlists and more.

Upon download, the app works in trial mode for a while. For the user to continue enjoying the service, a cheap, $3 monthly subscription is required.

In a blog post dated August 16, the app’s developer went on record to reveal that Apple had decided to pull their app, in what the company believed was a very strange move on behalf of the review board in Cupertino, California.

The developer first went on to say that they were extremely pleased to have their iPhone app posted to the App Store last week.

“Obviously the last few days have been insanely exciting for us,” the folks at Grooveshark said.

“Seeing months of laboring over a hot MacBook finally bear fruit, not to mention the happiness we get being able to provide a great service to music fans all over the world,” the company added.

Then, it revealed the sad truth, saying “Earlier this afternoon, Apple sent us a letter notifying us that, due to a complaint they received from Universal Music Group UK, Grooveshark for iPhone has been, strangely, pulled from the App Store.”

“This comes as an absolute surprise to us, and we are not sleeping until we figure out exactly how to fix this—and get Grooveshark for iPhone back in the App Store,” the developer pledges.

Grooveshark advises those who’ve already downloaded the app to continue enjoying it, while they get to the bottom of the issue.

“We’re going to keep working hard to provide the best services we possibly can across the web, BlackBerry, Android, Palm WebOS, Symbian, and everywhere else you love your music—including the iPhone,” the post ends.
