Polar bears are presently listed as an endangered species, which is why researchers and conservationists are doing their best to breed them in captivity.

News from Russia says that scientists in the city of Yekaterinburg now wish to use a grizzly female as a surrogate mom for polar bear cubs.

Their plan is to collect genetic material from a 15-year-old female polar bear named Aina and a 16 year-old male polar bear by the name Umka.

Embryos would then be created in a laboratory, and then transplanted in the womb of a healthy female grizzly bear. RT tells us that the scientists are thinking about using a female named Vetka. This is because the latter has successfully given birth to healthy cubs before, and is therefore a good candidate.

The specialists involved in this project are now carrying out preparatory work, and hope that it will not be long until they move to actually impregnating a female grizzly with polar bear embryos.

Here's hoping more news on the topic will soon come our way.
