These days, if you play your cards right, you can turn a small-budget indie film into a blockbuster. Just look at what happened with “Paranormal Activity.” This is exactly what the masterminds behind “Grim Night” are also gunning for.

The film has just been picked by Universal and, as a result, it already has a first teaser trailer online.

It doesn't reveal much, but it does promise to ditch Hollywood-type of effects and typical scares for a bit more substance.

Coming from first-time feature writers Brandon Bestenheider and Allen Bey, and producers Bryan Bertino and Adrienne Brittle, “Grim Night” imagines a spooky world ruled by strange occurrences.

On a given night each year, they come – they being the “Grims,” strange monsters who look like the Grim Reaper except that their victims are random.

In locations all over the world, the Grims spread terror and gore, prompting humans to seek refuge and, ultimately, a way to keep them away.

The film will focus on the struggle of the inhabitants of a small town in the US as they try to put an end to the annual Grim Night.
