Codemasters’ newly founded Racing label isn’t ready to talk about a sequel to Grid, one of the studio’s most popular games, despite the fact that the new division will only focus on racing titles, like its name suggests.

Codemasters has published over the years plenty of impressive games, from racing titles like Dirt or Grid, to shooters like Operation Flashpoint or last year’s Bodycount.

The studio recently decided to bundle its various teams that worked on racing games under a new label called simply Codemasters Racing.

The first game to be published under this label is this month’s Dirt Showdown, which is going to appear on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 soon enough.

After that, the Codemasters Racing division will work on the studio’s other franchises, including Dirt or Formula 1, but also on Grid, one of the most popular racing games from the studio in recent times.

Speaking with the PlayStation blog, Dirt Showdown Senior Producer Mike Chapman tackled the possibility of a Grid sequel, which has been demanded by fans for quite some time.

Sadly, he can’t say anything concrete about a new game in the series, but he highlights that if such a title were to appear, it will still be a high-quality experience.

“It’s great to see that, years after its release, the original GRID is still such a popular game and that people have hopes for a sequel,” Chapman said. “Matching and exceeding expectations would of course be our highest priority though if a sequel were to be made. However, I’m afraid to say that we don’t have anything to announce right now.”

This is certainly some bad news for Grid fans, who hoped that Codemasters Racing would be able to focus on other projects besides Dirt or Formula 1.

Even so, let’s hope that the studio will be able to produce a Grid 2 at some point in time.
