The game's launch trailer tells a pretty interesting story

Developer Petroglyph Games is launching Grey Goo on January 23, and they have just released a fancy trailer for it.

The real-time strategy game has a pretty unusual title, as most such endeavors usually benefit from resounding names foreshadowing the glory to be had at the end of arduous battles and strenuous tests of wit.

Not this game though, as Grey Goo seems to be quite enough for what it has in store. Granted, one of the factions will actually be the mysterious eponymous substance, a relentless blob of self-replicating nanobots.

The whole premise of the game is actually a famous apocalypse scenario that many sci-fi fans are familiar with, one that has been seen in countless shows (such as Stargate) to date.

The fancy CGI trailer does not show any actual gameplay, but does a pretty good job of setting the scene for the upcoming battles and showing an interesting science fiction universe. You can find the trailer as well as some gameplay footage from a developer livestream below.

A classic RTS with a lot of fresh ideas

The game has three asymmetrical races, the Beta, the Humans and the Goo, each of which is struggling to control the rare resources of a distant world, while at the same time embarking on a harrowing journey of testing biology’s prime commandments.

The game is evolved from the studio’s love of real-time strategy games, coming with both classic mechanics and neat new features meant to enhance gameplay. The team’s main mission is to offer a fresh take on the genre, with an emphasis on tactics rather than intense micromanagement.

Of course, the game will still follow the age-old paradigm of base-building, setting up production facilities and securing new resource nodes, then taking your dudes, exploring the map and trying to annihilate any and all opposition.

It’s certainly going to be fun to see a good-looking real-time strategy game that isn’t Starcraft 2. Hopefully it’s going to be good, but we’ll know for sure on January 23, when the game comes out for PC.
