France based publisher Ubisoft has announced that it plans to create and release a videogame based on the popular television series Grey's Anatomy. The game is going to be developed internally at the company and will be released in early 2009, which probably means sometime before the beginning of the summer months. Grey's Anatomy: The Video Game will be available for play on the Nintendo DS handheld, the Nintendo Wii home gaming console and the PC. No pricing points have been announced by Ubisoft.
Christian Salomon, who is the vice president of worldwide licensing at
Ubisoft, has delivered a statement saying that “Ubisoft is thrilled to be collaborating with ABC Studios to turn this phenomenal television series into an interactive experience. In Grey’s Anatomy: The Video Game, fans will have a chance to take on the roles of all of their favorite doctors in an all-new original storyline. As each doctor, players will make important personal and professional decisions, explore the direct relationships with each other, and perform the delicate surgeries the series is known for, all through fun and engaging game play.”
Ubisoft is not saying much about the title at the moment, but we can safely assume that Grey's Anatomy: The Video Game will be aimed squarely at fans of the television show and casual gamers. It will probably be sort of a cross between an adventure where you play multiple characters and sequences where, inhabiting the persona of one of the doctors on the show, the player has to solve medical situations.
Grey's Anatomy has been a commercial and critical hit for ABC, getting a few Emmy nods and a constant set of viewers. It remains to be seen how successful it might be as a videogame, given the fact that
Lost: Via Domus, another game created by Ubisoft based on a television series, has failed to be a hit.
