Up until today, iOS 4.2.1 hacking tools still provided what was referred to as a “tethered jailbreak,” which basically means that each time your device loses battery power or needs to be rebooted, you must attach it to a PC or Mac to boot into the jailbroken state.

Not anymore, according to the team of hackers at Chronic Dev.

The code tinkerers have released a new version of their Greenpois0n jailbreak tool which effectively provides an untethered hack, allowing users to run free as soon as the restoration process is complete.

Greenpois0n is currently a Mac-only jailbreak, but will soon become available for Windows and Linux users as well, Softpedia believes.

For now, we have no official information regarding the supported devices. However, since there isn't much fuss about it, it's fair to assume that all devices capable of running iOS 4.2.1 are supported by Greenpois0n 1.0 RC5.

Also worth noting is that Musclenerd of the iPhone Dev Team has confirmed a few facts for iOS jailbreakers and unlockers via his Twitter feed.

First off, the hacker said their popular PwnageTool jailbreak application might also support iOS 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak, should they get a green light from Chronic Dev (to use their exploit).

Those who’ve employed the iPhone Dev Team’s redsn0w can now apply the Greenpois0n jailbreak without worries, Musclenerd added.

“Yes, tethered 4.2.1 redsn0w JBers can just run #greeenpois0n over it for untether (restore only if you have problem),” reads a recent tweet of his.

Vice-versa is also a go, he said.

This article has a purely informational purpose and doesn't, in any way, suggest that you should hack your Apple device.

Using hacks may render your device unusable, or may reduce the quality of your experience employing the respective device.

If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch / iPad / Apple TV may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular-service provider.
