Greenie, a new Linux distribution based on Lubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) that is developed for users who edit eBooks and various documents, has been released.

Greenie is probably the only Linux distribution that focuses on the users who are mostly working with eBooks and documents. It's not like people can't get the software implemented in Greenie installed on any other operating system, but the developers felt that there was a need for this sort of distribution.

“After a long time, a new release of Greenie is back. Internally called ‘MoReWrite’, Greenie e-book edition use Linux Kernel 3.13, LXDE desktop and many tools to modify, read and write, translate, convert etc. e-books or classic documents.”

“With this edition, that works well on slower computers, you can have a good operating system for bookworms or anyone who wish a solid Lubuntu based system with LTS support. Common programs, like VLC, Firefox and many more are included, as well as slovak and czech language packs,” reads the official announcement.

The Linux distribution is rather small and it weighs a little under 1GB. It's pretty similar to the base OS, Lubuntu, and it shares many features, including the desktop environment. If the Linux distribution doesn't boot into the English language, you can change the default from the taskbar.

Even if the name of the OS is Greenie, the code name MoReWrite might shed some light on the intentions of the devs. MoReWrite stands for “Modify, Read and Write” and it shows the pedigree of the OS.

Just like Lubuntu, Greenie 14.04.1 is based on Linux kernel 3.13, which will be supported by Canonical for the next five years. Lubuntu 14.04 on the other hand is an LTS release, which means that it will benefit from three years of support.

Greenie is also packaged with a number of applications such as the LibreOffice suite, PDF viewer (incl. programs for editing PDF), Calibre, Sigil, FbReader, Geany, and many more.

Because Greenie 14.04.1 is based on Lubuntu and it uses LXDE, it also means that it has very low hardware requirements and it is able to run on a multitude of computers. Its makers have even managed to add some games and various console tools.

More details about this release can be found in the official announcement. Keep in mind that this Linux distribution can also be used as your daily OS and it comes with all the other regular applications. You can download Greenie 14.04.1 right now from Softpedia.
