Rock band Green Day topped the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards, winning sseven awards, including video of the year, best group video, best rock video and two trophies for direction and cinematography (for director Samuel Bayer).
"It's great to know that rock music still has a place at MTV," said Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong.
Green Day was also honored with the viewer's choice award for "American Idiot."
The Killers won for best new artist and Fall Out Boy won the MTV2 award for their song Sugar, We're Going Down.
The event took place at Miami's American Airlines Arena and was hosted by Sean "Diddy" Combs, who recently dropped the "P." from his name.
Among the top winners also were Kanye West, who won Best Male Video for "Jesus Walks," and Kelly Clarkson of "American Idol", who took home the Best Female Video award for "Since U Been Gone."
