Localized in Portuguese-only for now, but worth trying out

A Portuguese company called Eco Beneficios has come up with an ingenious solution that enables you to save power when you’re away from your Mac. All you need to do is… well, nothing. Just install it and GreenCam will take care of the rest.

GreenCam is an Adobe AIR application that allows you to reduce your electricity bill without any fuss at all.

Simply install the app, and slide the On / Off toggle to On.

When you’re ready for a break, just stand up and leave. GreenCam will immediately put your Mac to sleep, keeping it that way until you come back.

Unfortunately, the lazy folks at Eco Beneficios didn’t bother to include English localizations, so you might need to brush up on those Portuguese skills if you want to read through its interface.

However, if you just want to use it (without worrying about how much power you’re actually saving), the On / Off toggle will get you there.

And here’s a quick tip. Be sure to use it in a well lit room. GreenCam doesn’t work in dark environments because (obviously) it won’t be able to see you when you run off to pour another cup of coffee.

We’ve worked up a short description to include the download on our site for all of our faithful users, complete with a note that the app is localized in Portuguese only for now.

If you’re a native speaker of the language (or simply good at it), might we suggest you contact us with a translation of its interface? We’ll do our bit and contact Eco Beneficios to have it updated (no promises on the updating part, though).

In the meantime, enjoy using GreenCam on your Mac.

The requirements, as far as we could tell, include an Intel-based Mac with an iSight or FaceTime webcam, and OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
