The new year brings top downloable Wii-based games

Wii owners had the chance to play many classic games, brought back to life by Nintendo thanks to its game download service. Many famous titles that rocked the NES, Genesis and TurboGrafX back in the days have made their way to the Virtual Console.

Nintendo plans to offer the Wii gamers brand new titles, available for download starting next year. In case you're planning massive downloads, keep in mind that Nintendo intends to start with smaller puzzle games, then expanding to other genres and larger titles. The downloadable titles will cost approximately $8, a decent fee for top games, but a bit too much for the average puzzle title. We might see Nintendo in the publisher's shoes, helping out the smaller developers that want to distribute their games and make them available to the public.

We suppose that the WiiWare download service will be the main tool used to grant the Wii users access to new games, demos or trailers, rivaling the famous Xbox Live and Playstation Store. I'm sure that we'll see a bunch of Zelda titles available for download soon, as the never-ending series was well-received by gamers, even if meant playing 20 year-old games, available on the Virtual Console.

So, maybe one year from now, we'll go crazy and inform you that Nintendo now offers the latest Pokemon title thanks to its download service, instead of the standard Xbox Live downloadable demos that get all the hype and fame. In the meantime, we're waiting for Sony's response, as the PSN doesn't offer much content, compared to Microsoft's game download service.

Will Red Steel 2 be part of the downloadable lineup next to a The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess sequel and a groovy Wii Sports 2? This is all wishful thinking and a wonderful utopia, but many gamers would rather pay the price for a download instead of going out in the cold winter days and buy the newest Wii game. Or they could order it and hope that the courier doesn't freeze to death...
