uGet 1.10.4, a download manager for the Linux platform that features all the options you could possibly want, has been released, and the developers are also celebrating the 11th Year of uGet.

You might not realize, but uGet has been around for a long time and the developers are now celebrating their “11th Year of uGet.” As you can imagine, a lot of things have happened in 11 years, but the development for the software continued uninterrupted, gathering a lot of features.

uGet 1.10.4 doesn't seem to mark a major update for the application; it sounds more like a maintenance update. Nothing could be farther from the truth, as uGet 1.10.4 is actually of the most important update that has been released in a while.

Probably the most notable improvement is the support for Magnet Links, which is now possible via the aria2 plugin. The Magnet Links are becoming more and more common, and it made sense for the developers to want to get this functionality into their software.

The GnuTLS support is another major improvement and it can be configured if you start the application with the --enable-gnutls parameter.

Other smaller features include a new “Check for Updates” button that will make easier to find if any new versions have been released, new languages, a new “Message Banner” that allows developers to quickly distribute uGet news to the users of the application (can be closed with ease if you don't like it), and improvements to the Help Menu.

The uGet download manager also integrates into the two major Internet browsers on the Linux platform, Google Chrome and Firefox. In Firefox it's done through the FlashGot add-on (which just got some improvements in the 1.10.4 release), and in Google Chrome with an extension.

As it stands right now, Google's latest API changes are causing some disruptions with the Google Chrome extension, and the developers are working to restore its functionality. Even better, a uGet for Android version is also planned for a future release.

The uGet developers are also providing download links for all the major Linux distributions out there. For example, in Ubuntu there are two ways of getting the download manager, one with a PPA and the other one by installing a deb file. If you opt for the PPA, which is also our recommendation, enter the following commands in a terminal.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:plushuang-tw/uget-stable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install uget

If you also want to get the Aria plugin, do the same after the uGet installation has been completed:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:t-tujikawa/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install aria2
