Apple has approved Rockstar Games’ highly controversial sandbox-style action-adventure title, Grand Theft Auto III, the first GTA incarnation with 3D visuals. Preceded by Grand Theft Auto II and succeeded by Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, GTA III is priced at $14.99 and it can’t be downloaded by anyone under 17 years of age.

Grand Theft Auto III was released in 2001 for the PlayStation 2, and in 2002 for Windows PC gamers.

In November 2003, the title was launched for the Xbox gaming system developed by Microsoft.

It wasn’t until November 2010 that the game was finally released for Mac OS X, when the once-revolutionary 3D graphics looked like cubes tied together moving around in a sinful city.

But hey, you know what they say: better late than never. And in the case of titles like Grand Theft Auto, it’s never too late.

It was also made available on Valve Software’s Steam (video game distribution and multiplayer platform) on January 4, 2008.

Today, August 18, 2011, the decade old sandbox shooter finally makes it in the Mac App Store, Apple’s standard software distribution platform for Mac OS X.

Requiring Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later, Grand Theft Auto III boasts the following official description for Mac gamers:

Crime does pay.

The hugely successful, highly controversial Grand Theft Auto franchise moves into three dimensions in the dark and seedy underworld of Liberty City.

With the freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the dark, intriguing and ruthless world of crime at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.

According to Apple, “You must be at least 17 years old to download this app.”

If you haven’t played this piece of gaming history already, it’s high time you did. Weighing in at just over 700 MB, the game is localized in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish.
