Older GTA games might make a comeback for PS4 or Xbox One

Take-Two Interactive, the publishing partner of Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar Games, isn't ruling out a potential HD collection of previous games in the series, such as GTA 3, GTA Vice City, GTA San Andreas, or even GTA 4, for new platforms like PS4 or Xbox One.

The Grand Theft Auto franchise has been around for quite some time, and with each new iteration, it's broken sales records, managing to delight tens of millions of fans from around the world.

Developer Rockstar rolled out GTA 5 for the PS3 and Xbox 360 back in September of 2013, and it is currently preparing to launch the same game for the PS4 and Xbox One next month and for the PC in early 2015.

However, seeing as how quite a few older games are getting remastered for the new platforms, such as Microsoft's Halo: The Master Chief Collection, many fans are wondering about the odds of seeing a Grand Theft Auto HD collection.

Publisher doesn’t rule out HD remakes of older GTA titles

This point was raised during the latest Take-Two Interactive earnings call, and CEO Strauss Zelnick has tackled it by saying that right now all options are weighed in terms of the franchise's future.

"In any given year we and our key competitors launch new intellectual properties and new iterations of older properties. And occasionally, when we see a platform shift, we will take an old property and create an iteration of that in a very similar form for next-gen. And we wouldn't rule anything out," he says, via GameSpot.

Desire from fans and from Rockstar needs to exist

Zelnick also emphasizes that Take-Two offers a lot of freedom to both of its labels, Rockstar Games and 2K, so the decision to make a GTA HD Collection rests squarely on the shoulders of those divisions. What's more, interest from fans also plays a big role in deciding what projects proceed and what gets scrapped.

"That would be driven by the market opportunity that we perceive, and the potential for delivering a quality release. And that would be very much something that also would be driven by the passion of our labels [Rockstar and 2K]. It would not be something that we would mandate to our labels," he explains.

As such, while there may be a possibility to see a Grand Theft Auto HD Collection, don't expect it anytime soon, as Rockstar is still quite busy with GTA 5 for the new platforms, as well as with its ambitious GTA Online multiplayer mode.
