Grand Theft Auto 5, the latest installment in the open world series from Rockstar Games, has been a huge success and the company, together with publishing partner Take-Two Interactive, have confirmed that the title has earned $800 million (€591 million) in sales worldwide during its first day of availability.

GTA V was eagerly awaited by millions of fans from around the world and many wanted to see just what developer Rockstar could deliver with the new open world title.

While the game appeared only for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, anticipation was quite high and now Rockstar and Take-Two have revealed that the title has "achieved first day sell-through of more than $800 million worldwide."

This means that worldwide on September 17, in just 24 hours, more than $800 million were spent on GTA 5 by gamers, without counting big territories like Japan or Brazil, which will get the game in the near future.

"All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response to Grand Theft Auto V. Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry's new standard for creativity, innovation and excellence," said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two.

"Beginning at midnight on Monday, consumers around the world gathered in anticipation to be among the first to experience the evolution of this remarkable series. In North America alone, more than 8,300 stores opened their doors at midnight to welcome fans. We are incredibly proud of Rockstar Games' creative achievement and could not be more pleased with the success of this launch."

Grand Theft Auto 5 might soon get another version, besides the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 ones, as a PC edition has been heavily speculated in recent weeks and proof of it was found within Rockstar's official iFruit application.
