Rockstar Games has offered a few more details about the new cover system implemented in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 5, confirming that it will feature plenty of seamless transitions and, for the first time in the series, players can duck behind a car in order to protect themselves from bullets.

GTA V is anticipated by tens of millions of fans worldwide, and developer Rockstar Games has treated them with an impressive gameplay video earlier this week, showing actual sequences from the open world experience.

After confirming that the trailer featured footage from the PS3 edition of the game and detailing the new shooting mechanics, Rockstar has talked with GI about the new cover system that will be employed by the game.

According to Associate Producer Phil Hooker, the game's cover system retains the seamless transitions that are already present in the shooting mechanics.

"The game at times is all about switching from one character to the next, allowing the player to make fast choices with seamless transitions. We carried this mentality through into the cover system, keeping things intuitive and responsive whether the player is quickly dashing into or out of cover or moving round corners to take aim on a target," he said.

What's more, cover will be occupying the place between driving and shooting and, for the first time in the series, players can take refuge behind cars in order to dodge enemy bullets.

"We've also pushed the cover system to further bridge the gap between driving and gunplay. In addition to smoothly running out of a car whilst firing a gun, players are able to use their car as cover, getting out and staying low without exposing themselves."

"They can make a stand there behind the car for a while and then at any time quickly re-enter the car from cover or from shooting and speed away with little exposure to enemy fire. It can really make the difference at crucial moments."

Grand Theft Auto 5 is expected to receive more videos and gameplay details as we get closer to its launch on September 17 for PS3 and Xbox 360.
