Video game publisher Sony has announced that the 2012 edition of the GT Academy will launch on May 1 and that Polyphony Digital is planning to release a special demo version of Gran Turismo 5 2.0 in order to celebrate the event.

The demo will be free to download and will include a special qualification event that is accessible to all racing fans.

Those who perform well will be able to compete in national finals and the winner will then move on to a Race Camp held at Silverstone.

One lucky driver will then get to compete in the 24-hour race in Le Mans in 2013.

The official announcement also mentions the past performance of those who have gone through the Academy, saying, “The first ever GT Academy winner Lucas Ordonez managed an incredible podium finish last year at the world famous Le Mans 24H and the subsequent winners Jordan Tresson and Jann Mardenborough have both gone on to establish themselves as genuine racing talent whose blossoming racing careers will continue in 2012.”
