The development team at Polyphony Digital and publisher Sony officially confirm that they are working on Gran Turismo 6, a new racing experience that will be launched exclusively on the PlayStation 3 during the holiday period of this year.

Update: Gran Turismo 6 is official. Check out the full details, a gameplay video and screenshots, and expect a demo in July.

The game is designed to add authenticity to the racing simulation and will introduce new tracks and new cars for players to use, according to a press release quoted by iAfrica.

Apparently, on launch, Gran Turismo 6 will include close to 1,200 vehicles and there are 33 circuits for gamers to try.

It seems that DLC will be a focus for the new game engine.

Polyphony Digital is partnering with tire manufacturer Yokohama Rubber and suspension company KW Automotive to increase the realism level.

Kazunori Yamauchi, the creator of the series, states during the announcement at Silverstone Circuit that, “Things have changed a lot since then and now Gran Turismo 6 is a further evolution of my dream. We're pleased to deliver GT6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform.”
