Sony has confirmed what we have already suspected, announcing that it will deploy the Gran Turismo 5 XL Edition, basically a re-release of the original racing game with plenty of extra DLC, on January 17.

Gran Turismo 5 is one of the most popular racing games for the PlayStation 3, with millions of GT fans waiting a long time before finally getting their hands on the full pledged title, more than a year ago.

Now, for those who have yet to experience the racing simulator, Sony is preparing a re-release of Gran Turismo 5, in the form of an XL edition. This is similar to the Spec II version that was already announced for Japan late last year and would arrive in February.

Just like the Japanese release, Gran Turismo 5 XL includes the full game, plus all the patches and content delivered through updates since the original’s release, not to mention a voucher for plenty of downloadable content.

Check out all of the contents of the Gran Turismo 5 XL Edition below:

- Original Gran Turismo 5 game, featuring more than 1,000 cars, 20+ locations with 70+ track layouts, diverse racing styles including rally, track, karting, NASCAR, and more, deep online community features and online racing, plus Gran Turismo TV, Course Maker and more. - All of the new and improved features and functionality from all free downloadable game updates up through Spec 2.0 included on the disc. - Voucher good for over $20 worth of DLC content, including the Racing Car Pack, Car Pack 2, Course Pack, Racing Gear Pack, and Paint Pack. As a bonus treat, Sony is also including a special reversible coversheet, which features the front and the back of the new Red Bull X2011 supercar, plus the Spec II emblem, to add that special look to the racing simulator.

Gran Turismo 5 XL Edition is out on January 17, in North America, where it will be exclusive to the PlayStation 3 and cost $39.99 (around €31.4). As of yet, a release date for Europe hasn’t been revealed.
