Video game publisher Sony and developer Polyphony Digital have announced that their racing simulator Gran Turismo 5 has managed to move more than 6.3 million copies to players worldwide since it was launched in late November of 2010.

It seems that the biggest Gran Turismo 5 fans reside in Europe, with the region accounting for more than 3.9 million of the reported sales, while North America is lagging pretty far behind with sales of 1.5 million dollars.

Despite the development team being led by Japanese designers, Gran Turismo 5 has only managed to sell 600,000 units on the home market, which seems to be stuck playing previous versions of the racing game.

The series, which has been initially launched in 1997, has managed to sell more than 63 million copies when all the titles launched worldwide are taken into account, making it one of the most important racing franchises in the world of video games.

Gran Turismo 5 was long delayed by Sony, with the publisher saying on at least two occasions that the racing game needed more time to be ready, but when the game was finally launched, it managed to garner mostly positive reviews, including one from Softpedia.

The developers at Polyphony Digital are still working on Gran Turismo 5 and are busy balancing the game and adding more content for the multiplayer section, which was initially a bit underdeveloped.

An update arrived last week allows players to log in from a PC and play the B-Spec events, where the players control a driver as he competes in a variety of events.

The developers have not said whether they are working on Gran Turismo 6, but the team is probably not too eager to talk about it early, considering the heat they have been getting from fans of the series for the delays on the current release.
