Gran Turismo 5 is the long-awaited racing simulation title created by Polyphony Digital and published by Sony, which has finally been released on November 24 and allows gamers to experience a wide variety of events, from karting to NASCAR and traditional city and circuit races with more than 1,000 vehicles.

I talked yesterday about some of the Special Events in Gran Turismo 5 and how they can offer a bundle of cash and experience at that crucial moment, half way through the game when things seems to bog down but also about how annoying they can be.

And then I discovered the Nurburgring series of races which, to me at least, represent the heart of Gran Turismo 5.

Gran Turismo 5 treats the German legendary circuit very well and gives the player a chance to experience it in pieces but also as one long drive while using some superb racing machines tweaked by the well-known AMG

Fist off is the Mercedes 300 SL Coupe 54, which is quite fast and can slide out of control rather quickly, but is an excellent way to introduce the complexity of the Nurburgring Nordschleife, with its widely different sections.

The player then gains access to an SLS AMG 10, which is much quicker but also more temperamental, with a lot more care needed when taking high speed corners and an added element of instability, which forces me to take my finger off the acceleration more than in the 300 SL Coupe.

The sense of progression is excellent and it never seems like something just added in with artificial limits, like the NASCAR or the Top Gear stuff.

And the ever-present time limits, easy to achieve if you are only aiming to Bronze and seemingly impossible if you try for gold, are an always-present challenge which brings me back to the Nurburgring game modes in Gran Turismo 5.
