14 DAY TRIAL // Just when the world thought that Kanye West was done “feuding” with The Recording Academy since he agreed to return to the Grammys last night after 6 years, he pulls a Kanye West and goes on an angry rant backstage.
It’s probably safe to assume he won’t be coming back next year, even if he does have another album to promote or he’s heavily nominated. On the other hand, at least we know now that he was and still is Team Beyonce.
Beyonce loses Album of the Year, Beck wins
One of the big surprises of the night was when Beck was announced the winner of Album of the Year for his release “Morning Phase.” Fans and industry insiders had assumed that Beyonce had it in the bag, or if she didn’t win, that the accolade would go to newcomer Sam Smith.
Beck got it instead, and as you can see in the GIF below, Kanye rushed on stage with his hand reaching out, as if he was about to snatch the Grammy from his hand and run away with it and hand it over to Beyonce.
He stopped short of it and smiled, so people assumed that he was joking - as if he were making fun of his own behavior at the MTV VMAs years ago, when he pulled a similar stunt on Taylor Swift, telling her that he was going to let her finish her acceptance speech, “but Beyonce had the best video of all time.”
This interruption is now known as the “Imma let you finish” Kanye speech, and it was one that nearly sidelined his career for good because everyone thought he couldn’t have picked a worse person to do this to, because Taylor had been nothing but nice and kind and humble and lovable.
Kanye wasn’t joking
It’s not that Kanye was the only one to think that Beyonce got robbed of her award when Beck was named winner, but we assume none of those other people who felt this way, not even loyal Bey fans, would have rushed to Beck to rain on his parade and ruin his big moment.
As it turns out, Kanye West doesn’t joke. Khloe Kardashian, his sister-in-law (Kim’s sister) was on red carpet duties for E! News, and he spoke to her about the Best Album winner. In doing so, as you can see in the video below, he unleashed a typical Kanye West rant about how the Academy needed to stand up and recognize real talent, or the talent would pack up its toys and never play with the Academy again.
“And Beck needs to respect artistry and he should’ve given his award to Beyonce,” Kanye ranted, as Kim nodded and smiled in approval, and you could hear Khloe say “Amen” off camera. Everyone else from E! was stunned that Kanye would do such a Kanye move on camera.
So yes, Kanye is probably done with the Grammys… again. As mad as he is, his rants are hilarious because he always assumes he’s the ultimate authority in deciding what is flawless and “monumental,” and who should be awarded a distinction and who not. Not once does it cross his mind that he could be not wrong but highly subjective in his choices.
