Mayer hosted the The Late Late Show earlier this week

Here’s something you might have missed from John Mayer’s hosting gig on The Late Late Show earlier this week: in between interviewing the two dancing sharks who rocked the Super Bowl Halftime stage with Katy Perry last Sunday, he also made a little Taylor Swift joke.

You can see it in the Instagram video below, in which he says he will be at the Grammys this Sunday, “doing what I do best, being avoided by Taylor Swift.”

You need some context to get it: some years ago, after working on a couple of duets together, Taylor Swift and John Mayer dated for about 3 months, which was the average for all her romances at the time.

Rumor has it that he broke up with her over phone and she could never get over it. Or him. So she penned “Dear John” about the way he “mistreated” her, a release that took even John by surprise because, he would later say, he expected at least a heads-up.

Then, Mayer dated Katy Perry. They are believed to have reconciled as of a few weeks ago, with the rumors seemingly confirmed over the Super Bowl weekend, when photos of them backstage emerged online.

That in itself wouldn’t be a big deal if Katy and Taylor weren’t feuding right now as well: word has it things took a turn for the worse when Katy tried to hire Taylor’s backup dancers right from under her, in the middle of her tour.

Mayer’s little joke is no accident: the three will be in the same room together for the first time in months. Moreover, it is said that organizers have seated the two female pop stars in the first row only a few seats apart, and if Mayer joins Katy at any point during the evening, you can bet sparks will fly. Or at least that eyes will roll.
