Actress and singer Ariana Grande almost didn’t make it to the red carpet at the 2014 Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles at the Staples Center on Sunday and, when she did, she had a very hard time fighting back tears, according to a new report from E! News.

The singer was having a bit of a “freak out,” the celebrity publication notes, because she’d just gone online minutes before and had read a series of very nasty comments about herself.

Even though Ariana is well beloved by her fans, who appreciate her both as an artist and as a person (as much as they know her as one), she is often criticized for her fashion and particularly for her decision to style her hair in the same way for many months now. Apparently, that’s an issue that some can’t get over.

The report doesn’t say whether the criticism Ariana read before the Grammys had to do with her hair or not, but it does say that she was “practically in tears as her handlers buzzed around trying to get the situation under control” because “a blogger took to Twitter to slam Grande for how she looked.”

Embedded below is a video of Ariana’s arrival on the red carpet, when she posed for photos. If you look closely, you can see that, right at the start, she does seem uncomfortable and highly emotional.

“She's still not completely comfortable on carpets and she made the mistake of looking at Twitter. This blogger attacked her dress but also went after her hair and then more people started piling on. It was just mean. Ariana was like, ‘Why am I even here?’” an insider tells E!.

Usually, the young star doesn’t go online too often to read about herself, let alone ahead of such a major event as the Grammys because “she’s learning to grow thicker skin,” the tipster reveals. The other night was an exception that she probably regrets.

For the record, Ariana’s dress was a Dolce & Gabbana design, estimated at $9,000 (€6,586). A bolder pair of shoes would have complemented it better, but she still looked fabulous. As for the hair, the singer has already explained most of it is fake because her natural hair is in recovery from the years of bleaching and dyeing.
