Rihanna, Katy Perry and Julianne Hough shine on the red carpet

So, the Grammys 2012 happened on Sunday. For all the celebrities, besides being a night to celebrate achievements in music, it was also an occasion to show some fabulous fashion on the red carpet.

The red carpet ceremony ahead of an awards show has come to be as important as the actual ceremony, if not even more for fashion gurus and fashion lovers.

In this sense, the Grammys did not disappoint.

Here, we attempt to show you some of the ladies who truly wowed on the red carpet: the list could be longer than this, but let's just focus on some of the most startling appearances, fashion-wise.

Rihanna is known for many things but, for some reason, her impeccable style is not among them.

Usually preferring '80s inspired fashion and too revealing items, at most, she's a breath of fresh air on the red carpet, but she rarely wins point in the style stakes.

The other night was the exception, as the pop star looked absolutely eye-watering gorgeous in a sleek black number by Giorgio Armani, with a plunging neckline, low-cut back and high thigh slit.

Even if there's an unwritten rule about how much flesh you're to show at such an event and the areas you can't reveal all at once, Rihanna totally made this dress work.

For a more dramatic effect, she paired it gold and diamond jewels, including a body necklace on her back, Christian Louboutin shoes, and a Jimmy Choo clutch.

Country singer Taylor Swift was also feeling in a riskier mood than usual: though she normally goes for prom dresses or rather standard designs, for the big night for the music industry, she chose a fabulous Zuhair Murad in metallic gold.

Not only was it cut low on her back, but it also allowed her to show plenty of skin in the front, thanks to a cut-out panel on her chest.

She matched it with Prada shoes and Neil Jane jewelry, and a very uncomplicated bun – instead of her trademark curls or bangs.

Carrie Underwood was also stunning on the red carpet, this time in pale blue.

The star wore a Gomez-Gracia long-sleeve backless “Starlet” gown, with intricately embroidered sequins on tulle and a very low back.

For hair, she opted for a simple 'do as well, which also enabled her to show off her massive diamond earrings.

One of the best dressed of the night, though, was dancer, singer and actress Julianne Hough, who proved, once more, that sometimes less really is more.

She wore a black Kaufman Franco column dress with shiny accents. For hair and makeup, she was styled in the most natural way possible, which highlighted just how pretty she is.

Alicia Keys and Katy Perry also received plenty of attention for their dresses, though, in their case, the jury is still out: there was obvious more room for improvement.

Alicia wore a form-fitting Alexandre Vauthier dress, which she matched with Christian Louboutin shoes, just as the designer did when showcasing the dress. She could have chosen better.

Katy Perry, on the other hand, could have used better styling. Her Elie Saab gown was too precious to go with her electric blue hair, as also were the $2 million (€1.52 million) diamonds from Norman Silverman.

Honorable mentions go to Gwyneth Paltrow and Adele.
