At Sunday’s Grammy Awards 2011, the word of the evening was “glitzy.” During the red carpet ceremony, ladies strutted their stuff in designer gowns made of shimmery fabrics, putting a lot of leg on display.

Fashion insiders say the Grammys have never been the occasion to take fashion tips from celebrities because it’s the exact opposite of other fancy ceremonies like, say, the Oscars: everybody wears their most extravagant outfits.

Sunday’s ceremony was no exception. While many of these outfits can’t be replicated in real life by the regular Jane, they were still pretty impressive, either for how wonderfully they worked or for how shocking they were.

Since glitzy fabrics were a must, the two predominant colors on the red carpet were silver and gold, with the occasional splash of color or of black and white.

Kim Kardashian, for instance, wore a long Kaufman Franco golden dress of which she said it needed readjusting to fit her ample derriere.

The socialite had her hair styled in large curls and even had a few light blonde highlights done especially for the occasion. She matched the dress with nude Christian Louboutins and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

One golden rule on the red carpet says that a woman must either show leg or cleavage: Kim went for both, for which reason some fashion gurus consider her outfit a hit-and-miss.

Keri Wilson, who joined her on the red carpet, completely hit the mark. Decked in a Basil Soda blue dress, the singer accessorized with a clutch by Judith Leiber, and jewelry by Emsaru, Carrera y Carrera, and Le Vian.

American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez went for a dress by Emilio Pucci that could be easily compared to a disco ball, no offense. Still, she cut a very impressive appearance because it put her amazing stems on full display.

Lopez accessorized with spiked, sparkly Louboutins, jewelry by Cartier and a Goa crystal clutch by Daniel Swarovski.

Model Heidi Klum walked the red carpet with her husband Seal, who was nominated for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocal, wowing in a backless Julien Macdonald golden gown with a long train.

Katy Perry also sparkled, this time in custom-made Giorgio Armani, but it was not the same Armani she wore for her performance.

The gown she wore on the red carpet was made of a bustier encrusted with Swarovski crystals, a white train and angel wings of white feathers. She completed the look with shoes by Casadei.

Rihanna was among the few celebrities who didn’t wear something sparkly on the red carpet, but her outfit was just as eye-catching, if not even more.

The singer wowed in a Jean Paul Gaultier gown that left very little to the imagination. Christian Louboutin shoes and her fiery red ‘do completed the look.

Miley Cyrus went for a sparkly Roberto Cavalli gown with heavy jewelry, while Eva Longoria underplayed it in an Ashi bi-colored dress, matched with Sergio Rossi clutch and Brian Atwood shoes.

Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber’s girlfriend, also cut a sparkly figure in a creation by J. Mendel, Lorainne Schwartz jewelry, and pumps by Brian Atwood.

As for the other ladies, as we also noted the other day, honorable mentions go to Lady Gaga, who made a grand entrance carried on a sedan-like chair while she was inside a plastic egg, while Kate Hudson showed off her baby bump in a cut-out dress.
